In 2005 an opportunity presented itself for Harry Laurent to purchase Arcola Building Supply from John McDonald.

Having been a contractor for most of his life Laurent decided that it was a smart fit to own a lumber yard.

"I bought it in 2005, we used to be on Main Street and the store was literally 65 feet deep and 25 feet wide" Laurent explained. "So, we moved from that into this which was quite a shock."

Now located along Highway 13, a move that occurred in 2009 Laurent says they have gotten busier, have expanded their inventory by approximately double, and have drawn in people from outside of the community as well.

" It's been good ever since we moved out here, we've been busy," Laurent stated. "Everything is just larger, highway exposure is what made the difference. There were people in Lampman that said they didn't even know there was a lumber yard in Arcola."

"On the Highway you've also got Estevan, Weyburn, and Regina that are coming through to the resorts so they support us pretty good."

Laurent is proud to say the business doesn't resemble what he started with as he exclaimed it has grown over 300 percent.

Much of this success is in part to his knowledge as a contractor and his knowledgeable employees.

"As a contractor I knew what I liked and what I didn't like," Laurent said of the current building. "So, it's spacious; I hate clutter so I wanted it open. We don't hide prices, when you walk down an aisle you can see the prices clearly marked on everything, you don't have to look on the backside or search for it."

In addition to this the general attitude of people over the years has changed and when they ask for a quote on a project it is expected they get that quote right away. Thus, this is Laurent's mission: "to find a quote for the price for them [the customer] as soon as possible."

In addition to this kind of service, Laurent ensures his products also provide the same type customer oriented service. If the tools he sells lacks in this department he finds a new quality item, which also comes with quality service because it makes a difference.

Each year, because of their want of quality service, Arcola Building Supply hosts a customer appreciation day. Held on Friday, March 28, coffee and doughnuts were available for customers to come in and have a visit with the staff. In addition to the coffee and doughnuts, Laurent also had numerous prizes that could be won by submitting their names, while everything in the store was also marked at a 10 percent discount.

Overall Laurent is pleased with how business has been going and is always happy to great customers because quality products and quality service are two of Arcola Building Supplies main goals.
