The ALS Avengers walked in Regina's 'Saskatchewan Walk for ALS' on Saturday, Sept. 16, and by press time, the area team raised $ 6, 967.10.
“This isn't our final total,” says Leanne Van Dresar of Carlyle. “There are still some donations coming in. We'd really like to thank everyone who supported us and because of that support, we've been asked by the ALS Society of Canada to host a Walk for ALS in Carlyle next year. Right now, I'm looking at having it at Kenosee lake.'
For Van Dresar and the entire Avengers team, funding a cure for ALS and providing care for those living with the disease is a deeply personal mission, as the group fundraises to honour the memory of Judy Van Dresar - the wife of former Carlyle resident, Dale Van Dresar - and to support the ongoing battle against the disease by Carlyle resident, Gregg Fischer.
According to the ALS Society of Canada: “Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease or motor neuron disease) is a disease that gradually paralyzes people because the brain is no longer able to communicate with the muscles of the body that are typical able to move at will. Over time, someone living with ALS will lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow, and eventually breathe.
“ALS is not contagious. There are no effective treatments for ALS and no cure. Approximately 80 per cent of the people with ALS die within two to five years of being diagnosed.”
“It's a horrible disease,” says Leanne. “But we're committed to raising funds for a cure and bringing a Walk for ALS to this part of Saskatchewan.”
