Last year the Lions had 698 quads register for their 7th Annual Quad Derby, which always sees many people out enjoying spring.

April is here and soon the engines of an estimated 700 quads will begin to roar in Wawota as off road vehicle riders take off from the Wawota Forum to traverse the countryside through a series of routes laid out by the Wawota Lions a number of years ago.

As mud will fling and fun is had the annual Lions Quad Derby is always enjoyed by off road enthusiasts with riders travelling from as far as Regina to partake in the event.

With the snow melting and the days beginning to warm the Wawota Lions have recently begun planning their 8th Annual Quad Derby to raise funds for their club, which contributes to numerous community projects in Wawota and the local area.

After having a meeting on Wednesday, March 26, the Lions decided that the event would be held on April 26, weather permitting.

"Hopefully it will be a good turn out," Joel Carpenter, Wawota Lions' president, explained. "There was a lot of snow last year that wasn't going away, so we had to push it back, but this year looks promising."

The event will begin with a pancake breakfast between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., which will then be followed by rider registration from 10 a.m. to noon.

Riders will then be welcome to hit the trail, where they will enjoy seeing the countryside from their quads and side by sides. Zipping through the mud, often the messier it is out the more fun people have on the course.

All of the land owners have again consented to the use of their land, so the course will remain the same. The typical two paths of "good" and "bad," will be posted with the good trail being relatively little mud and less chance of getting stuck.

The beauty of the day, however, is that with nearly 700 vehicles tearing up the trail someone is willing to help others get out of a sticky situation.

Although the past has seen the "good" trail develop difficult spots to maneuver through as repeated travel creates ruts that can become challenging. This is really the fun of quading at the end of April in the wet mud though.

RCMP will attend with their quad to ensure safety of riders throughout the day.

Midway through the trail the Lions will again host a barbeque at the Cook Shack, where barbeques and picnic tables are brought in so they can feed the mass of participants and provide refreshments.

One of their major fundraisers of the year for the Lions, the quad derby is sure to be full of excitement and entertainment as always.

They will again have Silent Hands to be purchased, which brings a chance of winning a percentage of the total pot, and registering riders are entered into draws for cash as well as numerous prizes they can win donated by businesses and individuals in the community and surrounding area.
