In a celebration of their community, volunteers in Wawota brought together a weekend of camaraderie on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 in the form of Wawota Heritage Days.

Held before the community became determined to once again have a summer celebration as a way to welcome newcomers to the town and celebrate those who have lived there all their lives.

"It's been a few years since our community has hosted a summer weekend celebration but a few newcomers to our town and a few old faithful felt it was time to 'ignite the flame' once again," the committee explains.

The weekend included activities everyone, of all ages, could enjoy. Saturday began with a pancake breakfast, a show and shine, trade fair, skate board competition, and much more.

One of the major draws to the excitement in Wawota was the parade at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Over 50 floats according Shawna Cudmore, an event organizer, participated in the parade, which was a great success.

Local businesses, families, and many youth participated in the parade which boasted everything from typical floats to young bicycle enthusiasts with decorated bikes to antique tractors and horse drawn carriages. The great variety had people talking and was a great success as people were scattered along the parade route, which ran throughout the entire town.

For lunch there was the "Taste of Wawota" with a variety of food stalls set up in the Town Hall's parking lot. People flocked to the different tables including one dedicated solely to selling homemade pies.

The youth of the town were also well catered to as there was a Kid's Carnival held in the school's playground, which saw many enjoying a chance to win prizes and jump in bouncers. While many others found their way to a skateboard clinic and demonstration put on by B3 Xtreme Skateshop who attended from Yorkton.

Other fun activities included a slow pitch tournament and tractor slow races on Saturday, while Sunday saw a high tea and fashion show held in Town Hall, supper at the rink, and a cabaret featuring bands Push and Prism.

Overall the two-day event was considered a success by organizers who saw a great turn out for it.

Something for everyone, many residents of Wawota as well as many with connections to the town were happy to show their pride and celebrate in their summer festivities.
