WEYBURN – The Variations community choir is happy to be back singing again in person, and will be putting on their spring concert to celebrate their 30th anniversary with the theme, “Just Sing”.
Variations will have two performances, on Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m., both at Grace United Church.
“It’s celebrating that we can get together again and sing,” said director Colleen Weimer, noting that a year ago, the choir had to gather outdoors at a park just to practice, but they haven’t been able to have a concert for the community for the past two years due to COVID.
She noted this year’s choir has about 50 members, with some members not yet comfortable with rejoining the group.
“We don’t have everybody back singing, but for the most part we’re happy to be back singing again,” said Weimer.
The choir is accompanied once more by Gail Murray, and will be performing a program of music that celebrates the joy of singing, many of which will be very familiar to audiences.
The program will kick off with the Carpenters song, “Sing! Sing a Song!”, and the popular 1970s tune, “I’d Like To Teach the World to Sing”, and will end with the song, “As Long As I Have Music”.
For this last number, the choir will invite up any past members of Variations in the audience to come up and sing with the group.
A guest group will be the girls choir, Spirit of Grace, who will sing a couple of songs during the intermission, directed by Colleen’s daughter, Kendra Gonczy.
Later in the program, the Spirit of Grace members will join the Variations choir for the song, “Why We Sing”.
Tickets for the concerts will be available at the door, and will cost $10 for adults, and $5 for children 12 and under.
