The winners for the annual colouring contest in the Assiniboia Times received their prizes at the newspaper's office on January 9 and 10. The contest sponsored by Young鈥檚 Equipment and Peavy Mart had three age groups, including a category for five years and under, an ages six to eight grouping and a class for artists from the ages of nine to10.
To compete in the contest, children were asked to colour a picture of Santa with a sack of toys, which ran in the December 13 issue of the Times on page A2. Thereafter, entries were either dropped off or mailed to the office of the Assiniboia Times by the deadline of December 19.
鈥淭he Times started the colouring contest in 2012,鈥� said Linda Hall, the newspaper's sales manager. 鈥淭his year, all the prizes were donated from Peavy Mart,鈥� she added. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e done this for the last three years.鈥�
Like Peavy Mart, Young鈥檚 Equipment is another local business who have helped to sustain this entry level arts competition held shortly before Christmas. 鈥淵oungs Equipment sponsored the contest for the last eight years,鈥� Hall said. 鈥淭hey pick out the winners and Peavy Mart picks the prizes.鈥�
Caimbry Rogers aged five from Assiniboia won the first category. 鈥淚鈥檓 happy and excited,鈥� she said, when Caimbry received her prizes with her brother, Everett Rogers. Caimbry said she鈥檇 like to become a painter when she鈥檚 older.
Jonathan Hofer from the Rose Valley Colony east of Assiniboia won the eight-years-old category in colouring. 鈥淗e likes putting things together,鈥� his mother explained, after the family had reached the newspaper鈥檚 office to get Jonathan鈥檚 prize.
Emma McGillis of Assiniboia swept the contest's nine to 10 class. At nine years of age, Emma is also fascinated with the arts like the other contestants in the Assiniboia Times 2019 competition in colouring. 鈥淚 like to colour. I also like to draw stuff,鈥� Emma said. 鈥淭oday, I drew a triangle and put lines through it.鈥� She and her mother described Emma鈥檚 latest drawing as a project in abstract art.聽 聽
