"On Golden Pond" scripts are on their way to Weyburn's Tommy Douglas Centre.In preparation for an April production schedule, the centre's tourism and culture director, John Nolan, has begun plans to present the play, which may still be remembered as one of the best loved Academy Award winning movies sporting a family theme.The play is tentatively booked for the Tommy Douglas Centre the first week in April and the centre is also exploring the possibility of adding dinner to its theatre menu."We actually had not planned to present a spring production this year in order to avoid conflicting with the Weyburn Agriculture Society's production," said Nolan.
The Ag. Society was forced to postpone their annual play due to a lack of volunteer actors. A date for their next play will be announced at a later date."With the postponement of Ag. Society's comedy, I felt there was room to produce an excellent, heart-warming play that has beenwandering around in my memory banks for years. Some of us recall the huge success thisstory was in the film of the same name. It starredHenry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn and Jane Fonda."The movie version was adapted by playwright Ernest Thompson from his play. It received three Academy Awards, best actor (Henry Fonda), best actress (Katherine Hepburn) and Thompson won the Oscar for best screenplay. The picture also took home several Golden Globe awards."This story is about family, its challenges, struggles and triumphs," continued Nolan. "It is extremely demanding of director and actors in terms of presentation because it requires the playing of comedy, suspenseand drama. I believe we have many talented local performers who have the ability to make this a memorable production."In the next few weeks, Nolan is casting roles for an (approximately) 11-year-old boy to play the grandson, a mature 55 to 65-year-old female lead and two men in their 30s."This is an exciting opportunity for actors," said Nolan.
