The Red Market Barn has been an institution in the area for many years. In June Harold and Brenda Johnston took on the challenge of operating the Red Market Barn after purchasing the homestead on extremely short notice.

"It will be so much easier next year because we won't be scrambling," Brenda laughed.

The couple were moving into their new home, while both working in their respective fields and attempting to organize for the opening of the Red Market Barn. Though it was a stressful time they were able to successfully bring together their first Red Market Barn season. All of which was accomplished leading to an extremely successful first year for the Johnston's.

"It's been crazy, busy, awesome!" Brenda exclaimed, during the final day of the season for the Red Market Barn, held on Sunday, Sept. 1.

"We've had new vendors every weekend from lots of places, Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan. They're all happy to come and because of that attendance has been very high."

In fact, Brenda explains that the final weekend of the Red Market Barn this year drew larger crowds than the July long weekend and was amazed by how full their yard was on Sept. 1.

"I don't know which community we belong to, whether it's Wawota, Kenosee, Kennedy, or Carlyle it's been awesome," Brenda stated "Everyone has been helpful, supportive, and really very welcoming."

They've been welcomed into the communities they serve and are extremely thankful for the opportunity to continue the Red Market Barn in the area.

Through feedback from vendors and attendees the Johnston's have decided that after their successful season, next year's opening will occur during May long weekend.

"May 24th will be the first day next year," Brenda explained. "There are many greenhouses in the area and a lot have expressed interest in coming for May long because by July it's too late for much of their product."

The Johnston's also hope to bring in more farmers market items for next year as garden vegetables are very popular during the summer, although they are open to all types of vendors.

"We're pretty flexible and will welcome anything," Brenda said.

Overall the Johnston's are very happy to have bought the homestead with the Red Market Barn and have enjoyed their first year working as organizers of the destination attraction in southeast Saskatchewan.
