EDITORIAL: Dreams really can come true

Sometimes dreams do come true, but they take some patience before they can turn into reality.

Sometimes dreams do come true, but they take some patience before they can turn into reality.

Take the folks who formed the Weyburn Performing Arts Centre Society some 11 years ago; they knew the Cafetorium at the Comp and the various halls around the city were inadequate for what they were dreaming Weyburn was capable of hosting or putting on in terms of major events.

They began doing research into what other communities have done in terms of combining a performing arts centre with other community uses, so that Weyburn could end up with a multi-use facility that could accommodate larger events and gatherings, even conventions or concerts with more major artists than what the city usually is able to attract.

With a news conference held on Dec. 3 in the Comp library came the details of the Performing Arts Society now finally able to move forward with their dream; now they've changed to the Triple C Centre, the Cs standing for "Community, Culture and Convention Centre", which facility will be built as a part of the major work that is to begin for the Comp School, turning it from a Gr. 10-12 high school into a Gr. 7-12 junior-senior high school.

The dream was ambitious, to be sure, but this is why the principal members of the group have hung in for over a decade until the light finally shone at the end of the tunnel. If everything goes as it should, the province will put their mark of approval on the plans, it will go to tender in March and the ground-breaking for the centre will take place in May or June, 2011.

There will need to be community support to make this facility happen, and to that end, a number of fundraising efforts are about to begin, including a major lottery, a seat sale and the rights to name the facility as starters.

"Strike while the iron is hot", goes the saying; citizens of Weyburn and area, now is the time to bring this dream to reality. Let's rally around and ensure that it happens.
