The Weyburn & District United Way kicked off their 29th annual Communithon at City Hall on September 9.
Dignitaries including Souris-Moose Mountain MP Ed Komarnicki, Mayor Debra Button and Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA Dustin Duncan attended the kick-off and encouraged residents to support the fundraising event.
Duncan particularly encouraged new residents to the city to attend Communithon.
"Come see what it means to live in Weyburn and what it means to give back to the community," said Duncan.
Weyburn & District United Way President and Communithon Chair C. J. Mainil asked residents to volunteer at the fundraising event by helping to set-up, write receipts, serving at the canteen, staging and sharing their talents.
"We do encourage you to step out of your box and help us out," said Mainil.
Mainil also encouraged residents to donate to the Communithon through their payroll deduction and pre-authorized donation programs.
"It's easy and convenient," said Mainil. "Five dollars a month would donate $60 a year."
The goal for the 2010 Communithon is $127,900 and funds will go towards their 13 member agencies including the Weyburn Care-A-Van Society and Weyburn and area Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP).
Mainil said she hoped that businesses and organizations would let the United Way know about their fundraisers so that Captain United Tanner Russell and Lady Charity Elanne Krainyk could attend.
Communithon will take place at the Weyburn Comprehensive School on October 22 and 23.
