"Look into my eyes" is a phrase with a whole bunch of connotations. The first and probably most obvious is the love story scenario. He sees her, she sees him, the chemistry kicks into action and the rest iswell, you know that's the stuff of stories, songs, suffering and salvation.

While the lovers' look delivers the most value when it comes to sentiment, that same phrase has preceded many a disciplinary session. Who of us, as parents or grandparents, has not cupped a little head in our hands and queried "I want you to tell me the truth. Look into my eyes and tell me what really happened."

These past three weeks, however, I've discovered a new, albeit difficult, application of the phrase as I underwent the scrutiny of my eyeball and all that goes with an optical nerve. Lights and tests, accompanied by stinging, blurring kinds of drops became the focus of my days as opthalmologists searched out the source of my unrelenting headaches and increasingly clouded vision. The news wasn't the best but it was far from the worst verdict I could have received.

I can't help but think of our relationship with God in each of these functions. To know how deeply He loves, how fairly He assesses our deepest secrets and how diligently He seeks out those things that hinder our spiritual sight is to experience the full range of His concern for us.

Never again will I take my eyesight for granted yet I so easily forget that He never takes His eyes off of me. No matter where I am, I remain the object of His attention.

"Keep and guard me as the pupil of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings." (Psalm 17:8 - Amplified Version)

In looking into His eyes, we see all we need.
