Lights of Love illuminate Centennial Park in Assiniboia

ASSINIBOIA - Now in its fourth year, the Lights of Love came to Centennial Park with a special light up ceremony November 16.

“Our goal was to light up Centennial Park in Assiniboia in memory of loved ones lost,” explained Stephanie VanDeSype, Recreation and Community Wellness Manager with the Town of Assiniboia. “Every year, we collect donations, and it’s just $10 a name in memory of somebody.”

All of the money collected is used to buy lights in order to decorate the trees, creating a beautiful and comforting outdoor feature. From now until mid-February, people can not only enjoy a unique walk in the park, but remember those loved ones who meant so much. Bringing peace to people in a time of grief is important, and especially the knowledge that those going through this season of life are not alone. “It’s always quite comforting to be around others who are feeling the same grief as you are,” said VanDeSype.

Getting the lights on the trees is intensive, but thanks to the generosity of Paul and Martin Tendler and the donation of their lift every year, Public Works staff are able to make that work a little easier.

“It’s something we’re really proud of, and it’s got some good momentum,” VanDeSype said of the project, noting that perhaps the lights in Centennial Park may even become another attraction in town for tourists.

The night of the lighting ceremony is a special event as well with the Assiniboia Choir in attendance, people gathering to enjoy some hot chocolate, and then a countdown for that magic moment when the lights illuminate the park.
