Church bells in Kisbey tolled 100 times at sunset on Remembrance Day as part of the Bells of Peace ceremony held in hundreds of communities across Canada marking the 100thanniversary of the end of World War 1.
The bells concluded the annual remembrance service attended by approximately sixty dignitaries and guests. Comrade Nora Weightman of Kisbey Branch, Royal Canadian Legion chaired the proceedings and Sergeant-at-Arms John Vouture marshalled the parade led by the Rebekah Lodge colour party, followed by representatives of Carlyle and Kisbey branches of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Moose Mountain Squadron 723 and Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation.
Following the reading of the Honour Roll naming 34 young men from the Kisbey, Arcola and Pheasant Rump communities who were lost in World Wars I and II as well as Korea and Vietnam, Cannington MLA Dan D’Autremont delivered a moving presentation on his personal pilgrimage to a family member’s gravesite in Holland. Guest speaker Corporal Geremy Quiambao, Avionics Systems Technician with 431 Air Demonstration Squadron-Snowbirds in Moose Jaw offered his perspective on Remembrance Day that included remembrance, reflection and service to others.
Spiritual observance was led by Reverend Koshy David with scripture readings by Kevin St. Jean and traditional hymns accompanied by Janelle David on piano. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan, the Rural Municipality of Brock, the Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation and the Village of Kisbey, with additional contributions from local businesses and individuals.
Honoured veterans in attendance were Albert Hale and Clarence Hookenson who served during World War II, James McArthur who served in the Korean War and Viet Nam and United Nations Peacekeeper John Vouture.
