Kids' camp remains a special memory for me. Every summer for a number of years I and a group of others my age would memorize enough Scripture verses to earn a free week at Burrard Inlet Bible Camp. The process of learning, earning and attending captivated my attention for months before and the sweet taste of those days lingered for weeks afterwards. Camp days meant happy days: organized games and activities, sharing meals in the dining hall and competing for the top bunk in the dormitory. I never was and still am not very adept at creating things out of clay or paper and ribbons but boy, did I enjoy trying! Above everything else, though, camp meant being away from dad for seven days.
As I've written before, Father's Day never evokes pleasant thoughts for me but over the years I've come to know and respect men who not only serve as examples for their own children but as models of God's love to the world around them. I've learned to trust again and for those of us who have walked the valley of betrayal, learning that we really can trust God is an incomparable treasure.
One of the greatest blessings of my life now is to watch how diligent our sons have been in raising their children. My granddaughters have had the advantage of learning life lessons in an environment of love and integrity; it's a privilege denied too many.
This article, then, is dedicated to all those dads who encourage confidence and respect in the lives of their children while preparing them to face the challenges of living. You are to be honored and celebrated.
"Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us that we should be called children of God" 1 John 3:1
Thoroughly enjoy your special day, Dads!
