Well, folks, it's that time again. As we bid farewell to this year and this decade, I for one find it hard to grasp that we're hours away from the first day of 2011. Remember the dire warnings of 1999? Would the world systems crash? More importantly (at least to me) - would my computer crash! Reaching back to my days at college, I recall trying to figure out how much I could accomplish between my graduation date (1964) and the end of the century. Wonder of wonders, we're still around - hale and hearty, considering the effects of a few extra decades of living.
But what of the future? For our household, there are major and someone unnerving events coming up: the enlistment and assumed acceptance of our eldest granddaughter into the Canadian army; the wonder and excitement of watching our newest granddaughter learn to walk, talk and further wind herself around our hearts; and, for me, the first steps to retiring my company.
For hubbie, also known as "Steady Eddy", it's business as usual: walk 8-10 kilometres each day to help control his diabetes; continue to help our two sons in their renovation and building projects; and, continue to keep his mind sharp with word search puzzles.
In other words, there's nothing really earth-shattering taking place in our personal world unless. "I would have lost heart unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." Psalm 27:13 said the Psalmist.
Unless can feel like the end of the word but for David, unless was the beginning. Out of the inner recesses of his being he threw the crushing weight of his circumstances upon his God and in doing so, he touched His heart, heard Him speak and found himself able to rejoice.
Happy New Year!
