SOUTHEAST SASKATCHEWAN - Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for southeast Saskatchewan, including the Carlyle, Oxbow and Moosomin areas, saying a system is poised to strike eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba in the coming days.

The advisory was issued Sunday late afternoon, saying a strong low-pressure system approaching from the south will bring rain, freezing rain, snow and strong winds beginning Monday evening and continuing Tuesday through Wednesday. Precipitation in many areas will start out as rain or freezing rain, and then transition to snow as colder air gets wrapped into the system.

"Very strong northwest winds are expected to develop as the system intensifies, with gusts to 80 kilometres per hour, resulting in very poor visibility in snow and blowing snow. Blizzard conditions are possible in some areas."

Widespread snowfall accumulations of 15-30 centimetres are likely with this system. More could occur over the higher terrain of western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan.

"Expect warnings to be issued as this event draws nearer," Environment Canada said.

In the wake of this system a much colder Arctic airmass will be in place, with daytime highs in the -5 to -10 C range.
