ESTEVAN – The second annual Armageddon arm-wrestling tournament took over Fired Up Grill in Estevan this weekend, bringing in 60 competitors and drawing a strong local crowd. The event, organized by the Estevan Â鶹ÊÓƵern Impact Armwrestling Club, saw 160 arms pulled across various divisions, from youth to open men’s categories.
“This is our second time doing the Armageddon tournament in Estevan,” said Desiree Da Silva, a member of the Estevan Â鶹ÊÓƵern Impact Armwrestling Club. “It’s an arm-wrestling tournament that is open to anybody to compete in. It does not matter where you're from, if you've arm-wrestled before or not.”
The tournament saw participation from across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, with the club itself contributing 24 competitors.
Venue change allows for growth
The event was initially held at the Estevan Curling Club’s lounge last year, but growing participation led organizers to move it to Fired Up Grill.
“The venue is wonderful. The service is good, the food is good. It's got the different tiers of levels so people can see,” said Da Silva. “There is still a private room for people who want it a little bit quieter. There is still the bar that we don't let children into. It keeps it there for everybody to enjoy.”
The move proved beneficial, as the tournament drew even more competitors this year. The club itself has seen steady growth as well.
“When we first started, I think there was like five or six of us that just started. Now we have about 28 members,” Da Silva added.
Highlights and special awards
One of the most anticipated matches of the event was the showdown between Adam Thompson (Brandon, Man.) and Nathan Muir (Saskatoon, Sask.), which was recognized as the Match of the Day.
A $100 Canadian Tire gift card was awarded to Solomon Latimer (McLean, Sask.), while “G.O.A.T” trophies were presented to Ryan Heron (Winnipeg, Man.), Terry Palaschak (Moose Jaw, Sask.), and Ward Drake (Pipestone, Man.) for their outstanding performances.

Looking ahead
Funds raised from Armageddon are being donated to Saskatchewan Arm Wrestling in support of the national championship, which will be held in Regina this year.
“With our entry fees, we do not keep them. We are donating them back to Saskatchewan Arm Wrestling because Saskatchewan Arm Wrestling is hosting nationals this year,” said Da Silva.
The club is preparing for provincials, set to take place on April 26 in Saskatoon, and then for nationals, set to take place in Regina from July 4 to 7.
“As of right now, everybody that is in Estevan here, in our local club, is participating at nationals,” said Da Silva. “We will have at least 75 competitors from Saskatchewan going.”
Looking forward, the club remains committed to promoting the sport.
“We plan on doing the Armageddon tournament again next year,” Da Silva confirmed.
