An Arctic ridge of high pressure is expected to settle over parts of Saskatchewan this evening.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for northwest, central, southeastern and parts of northern Saskatchewan. The warning was put in effect at 3:45 p.m. CST on Friday.

An Arctic ridge of high pressure is expected to settle over parts of Saskatchewan this evening, bringing frigid temperatures to the region. Air temperatures will drop to nearly –30 C overnight, and winds of up to 15 km/h will push wind chill values to around –40C. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Saturday morning.

Extreme cold poses a risk to everyone, with frostbite capable of developing within minutes on exposed skin, says Environment Canada. Officials advise residents to cover up, keep dry and avoid prolonged exposure. Pet owners are also reminded that if it’s too cold for them to stay outside, it is too cold for their pets as well.

Outdoor workers are urged to take regular breaks in warm areas to reduce the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when dangerously low temperatures or wind chills present an increased risk to health. Residents should take precautions to stay safe as temperatures plummet.
