RED DEER, ALTA. - The Western Hockey League (WHL) Cup is underway in Red Deer, Alta., and Team Saskatchewan is being led by an Estevan product.
Boston Tait was named captain of the team just before the tournament started on Oct. 23. Tait was born in Estevan and played all of his developmental hockey in the Energy City until this season, when he joined the Regina Pat Canadians U18 AAA squad.
He was selected in the first round of the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft by the Wenatchee Wild.
Saskatchewan went 2-1 in the round robin. They opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Alberta on Oct. 23 – a game Saskatchewan led 5-0 after two periods. Then they lost 6-3 to B.C. the following day. Tait recorded an assist in the game.
Saskatchewan closed out the preliminary round with a 5-0 victory over Manitoba on Friday. Tait scored Saskatchewan's third goal.
The tournament's semifinals are Saturday and the first and third-place games will be Sunday.
