Estevan police make arrests for impaired driving, assault, meth

Police conducted several traffic stops and sobriety checks on March 5 and 6, resulting in arrests.

ESTEVAN - The Estevan Police Service has been kept busy, handling a variety of calls and arresting a few people. 

The EPS conducted several traffic stops and sobriety checks on March 5 and 6. Suspended drivers and non-registered vehicles were some of the offences identified by police. Two separate arrests occurred for individuals found to be breaching their release conditions and one person was arrested for obstructing a peace officer after giving a false name during an investigation.

EPS members arrested a 40-year-old woman March 6 for breaching her conditional sentence order, as she was found to have a bladed weapon and a small amount of methamphetamine in her residence at the time of a conditions check.

Officers responded to a complaint of a male going through a dumpster behind a local business. Members spoke with the male and sent him on his way.

A report of a domestic disturbance was received. Members attended to the residence and the matter remains under investigation.

The Police and Crisis Team (PACT) assisted patrol officers during several calls for service. 

Members received a report March 7 of a gas drive off from a local service station. A licence plate was obtained from staff and members are attempting to contact the registered owner of the vehicle.

A report of a suspicious person at a local park resulted in members attending and speaking to a youth who was subsequently transported home.

The EPS and Estevan Fire and Rescue Service attended to a two-vehicle collision in the central part of Estevan.  One vehicle was damaged sufficiently to require a tow from the scene.

A report came in of theft of power from a residential property. A statement was obtained from the homeowner and the matter remains under investigation.

A report of a missing youth was received. During the initial stages of the investigation, the youth returned home and was found to be safe and well.

Following a traffic stop, a female was arrested for impaired driving and provided two samples of breath with results of .14, above the legal limit.

During a separate traffic stop, a 17-year old driver provided a breath sample which resulted in a reading of “warn”. The vehicle was towed and her licence was suspended. A 16-year old passenger was also present in the vehicle at the time of the offence, which extended the duration of mandatory vehicle impoundment.

A male reported being assaulted at a local business. The suspect was located a short time later and arrested and charged with assault.

EPS members assisted EMS with a medical emergency at a local business on March 8.

Police were called to a residence as a result of a domestic disturbance between a father and son. Members located the son outside and noted he was under the influence of drugs despite being on court-ordered conditions to abstain from the consumption of alcohol and drugs. The male was arrested and lodged in cells until sober, and will be charged with breaching his release conditions.

Police investigated a report of youths driving around and drinking alcohol in a vehicle. The vehicle was located. It contained several young people with open beverage alcohol. The driver passed a roadside breath test, however the occupants in the vehicle were issued tickets under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act (AGRA) for having open alcohol in a vehicle.

Police responded to a report of an unwanted guest in a residence. Members attended and escorted the individual out of the residence without incident.

Two separate traffic stops were conducted during which an oral fluid drug testing device was utilized. This resulted in a three-day licence suspension and a three-day vehicle impound in the first instance. In the second traffic stop, the driver had a previous suspension which increased the duration of the new suspension to 21 days to go with a seven-day vehicle impound.

Police responded to a local licensed establishment following a report that a male was refusing to leave when asked to do so. Members attended and escorted out the male.

Police responded a 911 hang-up call in which screaming was heard in the background. An address was provided by the 911 operator, and upon EPS members’ attendance, it was determined that a domestic disturbance was occurring. Nothing criminal had occurred to that point and those involved were separated for the night.

A report of a vehicle being taken without consent was received by EPS. The matter remains under investigation.

A curfew check was conducted March 9 on a male who is on a conditional sentence order (CSO). Police determined he was not at his approved residence and he will be arrested on an allegation of breach of CSO once located.

An excessive noise complaint was received at a residence in Estevan. Upon police attendance, the noise was found to be reasonable and no enforcement action was taken.

The EPS received 58 calls for service over the weekend. While conducting traffic enforcement, members issued five driver's licence suspensions of varying durations and as a result, impounded five associated vehicles. Police also issued a number of tickets for individuals unlawfully possessing liquor in pubic or in a motor vehicle.

A report of a theft of a motor vehicle was received from an individual who indicated their vehicle had been stolen in Regina. The EPS assisted their Regina counterparts to investigate the matter.

Police received a report of an assault. The individual responsible has been identified and charges are pending.

EPS received a missing person complaint. The individual was located by police and determined to be safe and well.

Police charged a number of individuals over the weekend for failing to comply with release conditions imposed on them by the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan.
