ESTEVAN - In a sign of the gradually-drying conditions in southeast Saskatchewan, members of the Estevan Fire Rescue Service were called to a grass fire last week.
Deputy Fire Chief Kyle Luc said that in the afternoon of July 16, the EFRS was alerted to a fire along the train tracks, approximately four kilometres northwest of Estevan. Once on scene, it was determined to be a small fire. Crews were at the scene for approximately 45 minutes.
"There was no damage to any properties as a result, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation," said Luc.
The moisture in June really hampered the grass fire risk in the Estevan area, he said, and this was the first incident of its kind for the fire department in weeks. There still isn't a risk of having to implement a fire ban in the Estevan area, he said.
Also, on July 20 at approximately 5:30 a.m., crews were dispatched to commercial fire alarms in the northeast area. Once on scene, members were met by maintenance personnel. A sweep of the building determined the alarm to be false and possibly caused by humidity.
In the community, firefighters attended the Estevan Playparks' pancake breakfast July 18, and they were on standby in case they were needed at the Estevan Motor Speedway on July 20 and 21.
