ESTEVAN - The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs senior girls' basketball team will host the 13th annual Victor Elias Memorial Shoot for a Cure Pink Basketball Tournament on March 1 and 2 at the ECS gymnasium.
Nine teams will be competing in the event, which is not only a showcase of basketball talent but a fundraiser for the fight against cancer. Elecs senior girls' basketball coach Jessie Smoliak said they will be raising money for two men in the community, Roland Montebon and Bob Seibel, who have been battling cancer.
Seibel is battling multiple myeloma, which is cancer in the white blood cells. The father of ECS teacher Melissa Holman, Seibel has been a supporter of the basketball programs at ECS for years.
Montebon is the father of Khyrstal and Bethany Monetbon. Both were student athletes on the senior girls’ basketball team. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the fall of 2023.
All proceeds from the tournament will be going to help these two families. Smoliak said the theme is Barbie (with Montebon and Seibel as their two Kens).
The Elecs will play twice on the weekend. The first game is March 1 at 6:15 p.m. in what will be their annual pink game, when they will don pink jerseys and other attire. The tournament's opening ceremonies will precede the game. Their other game will be at 11:30 a.m. on March 2 against Moose Jaw Vanier.
Smoliak encourages the public to come out and watch some great basketball, enter to win some prizes, donate to an excellent cause and have a couple snacks.
The tournament is named in honour of Elias, who was Smoliak's father. He died of cancer in 2017.
