ESTEVAN - The Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins delivered three entertaining games in a three-day span on the weekend.
It started with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Weyburn Red Wings on Friday night at Affinity Place. High-scoring rookie forward Steven Steranka scored late in the first period to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Cyprus Smith-Davis' goal 65 seconds into the second tied the game, and it remained a 1-1 score until Blake Betson's goal 3:35 into the third put Weyburn ahead.
Ewan Rennie scored for the Bruins with 36 seconds to play in the third period to send the game to overtime, and Luke Dekay scored the winner 53 seconds into the extra frame for Weyburn.
Zach Shaughnessy stopped 29 shots for the Bruins, while Ty Matonovich had 32 saves for Weyburn. Both goalies came up with some stellar saves during the game.
The following night, Estevan went into Weyburn and came away with a 5-2 upset win over the division-leading Wings. Kanye Huang opened the scoring five minutes into the game with his first as a Bruin, but Jerome Maharaj tied the game for Weyburn before the period was out.
Estevan took over in the second. Rorey Elson put the Bruins ahead 2-1 16 seconds into the frame. Kent Moors extended the lead to 3-1, and while Jaxson Ruthven got one back for Weyburn, Hayden Pimm restored the two-goal lead.
Luke Hogan's empty-net goal for Estevan with 20 seconds to play was the only goal in the third.
Shaughnessy picked up the win with a 26-save performance, while Angelo Zol made 26 stops for Weyburn.
The Yorkton Terriers defeated Estevan 6-3 Sunday at Affinity Place. The two teams traded goals in the first, with Rylan Ringor and Steranka scoring for Estevan, while Vinay Junek and Jaron Desnoyers had Yorkton's goals. All four goals came in the opening seven minutes.
Junek scored early in the second and Quinn Tavender tallied a few minutes later to put the Terriers up by two, and Tylan Henrickson scored midway through the third for Yorkton. Hogan notched one for Estevan, but Jaron Desnoyers put the game away with an empty-net goal before the period was out.
Luke Norman, a 16-year-old call-up from the Battlefords U18 AAA Stars, had 34 saves on the night for Estevan. Ethan Farrow made 28 saves for Yorkton.
Estevan (14-20-5-1, 34 points) remains fourth in the Viterra Division and 10th overall in the SJHL. The top eight teams in the league make the playoffs. The Bruins will visit the Humboldt Broncos on Feb. 5, and the Flin Flon Bombers on Feb. 7 and 8.
