SOUTHEAST SASKATCHEWAN - The snowstorm that has slammed into southeast Saskatchewan has caused the postponement of games in a couple of provincial senior hockey series.
The Carlyle Cougars were slated to play host to the Round Lake Bears in Game 3 of their best-of-three Hockey Saskatchewan senior A south semifinal series on Sunday evening. But in a post on their Facebook page, the Cougars said they had been contacted by Hockey Sask and have been advised to postpone Game 3 due to poor and impassable road conditions. Some highways in the southeast are now closed.
Game 3 is now slated to be played in Carlyle on March 4, starting at 8 p.m.
Round Lake forced Game 3 by defeating the Cougars 4-0 on Saturday night in Carlyle. After a scoreless first period, the Bears scored twice in the second period and added two more in the third. The Bears' final goal was into an empty net.
Carlyle won Game 1 7-4 on Feb. 25 in Ochapowace.
The winner of the series will advance to the south final against Balcarres or Lumsden.
Also on the weekend, the weather shelved Game 1 of the senior C south final between Kyle and the Carnduff Red Devils, which was to be played Saturday night in Carnduff. A make-up date has not been announced. Game 2 is slated for March 9 in Kyle and Game 3 is to be played the following day.
One provincial game involving a team from the Big Six Hockey League was played on Saturday. The Carnduff Red Devils defeated Craik 4-1 in Craik to win the best-of-three senior D south semifinal series in two straight games.
The Rockets opened the scoring with 4:11 to play in the second period on a goal by Drew Hoff. Declyn Henderson and Oliver Poirier scored in the third to put Redvers up by three. Craik scored their lone goal with five minutes remaining, but Kenton Miller's goal a few minutes later finished the scoring.
Cody Matthewson was in goal for Redvers.
Redvers won Game 1 8-1 on Feb. 24 in Redvers.
The Rockets will play Foam Lake in the next round.
