SASKATOON — A Saskatchewan delegation, including USask senior leaders, recently travelled to Germany to foster strong research and economic connections through several key events.

The delegation from USask included Vice-President, Research, Dr. Baljit Singh (PhD), Dr. Steven Rayan (PhD), director of USask’s Centre for Quantum Topology and Its Applications (quanTA), and Alix Hayden, director of USask’s Innovation Mobilization and Partnerships (IMP) unit.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe was also an integral part of the trip to Germany, with the premier acting as one of the witnesses for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing between USask and one of Germany’s top research institutions and fostering connections between Saskatchewan and the world on an international stage.

“I was pleased to witness the signing of this MOU in Germany, highlighting the great work of our province’s post-secondary institutions. These engagement efforts allow us to further connect Saskatchewan with global partners,” the premier said. “International co-operation and collaboration leads to new investment, creates jobs, and keeps Saskatchewan’s economy strong and steady during these uncertain times.”

The delegation started the mission with the signing of an MOU with Die Stiftung Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover (TiHo), one of the top veterinary medicine schools in Germany. TiHo is renowned around the world for its innovative research and advancements into veterinary science fields like animal health, food safety, and zoonotic diseases.

Along with Moe, this important signing ceremony included Singh, TiHo President Dr. Klaus Osterrieder (DVM) and Dr. Joachim Schachtner (PhD), State Secretary for Science and Culture in Lower Saxony.

USask has already established a strong relationship with TiHo researchers, and this new MOU formalizes that relationship to further connections in research and education.

“Our university and our province have enjoyed strong relationships with our counterparts in Germany for decades,” Singh said. “This newest MOU, witnessed by our premier, will give us the energy and capacity to address the greatest challenges of today as a unified, co-operative front.”

The six-day trip spanning from March 30 to April 4 included many opportunities for USask and the Government of Saskatchewan to connect and explore research and industry advancements, including attending Hannover Messe, one of the world’s largest and most influential industrial trade shows showcasing new technology and software developments. This year, Canada was the official partner country for the Hannover Messe, further cementing strong connections between Canada and Germany.

USask’s Opus program and innovation pathways have led to incredible opportunities for researchers to develop their work from the laboratory into the world. Hayden participated in the Eureka Global Innovation Summit which took place in conjunction with Hannover Messe, where she presented the strengths of USask’s innovation framework and potential avenues for partnerships along with other international post-secondary institutions.

In addition, Rayan gave a brief presentation on Hannover Messe’s Tech Transfer stage, introducing quantum research and startups from USask. As a renowned quantum researcher, Rayan led a conversation on quantum technology in the industry space.

Singh was part of a panel at the Hannover Messe titled “The Prairie Innovation Ecosystem,” where – alongside other experts from Saskatchewan and Manitoba – he had the opportunity to share information about key research links and future innovation with an international audience.

“To be the university the world needs, USask must cast its efforts across local, national and international collaborations,” Singh said. “This chance to share the knowledge and capacity of initiatives undertaken right here in the Prairies shows the international community our capabilities and innovations.”

As part of the University Plan 2025 and the International Blueprint for Action 2025, USask places a strong emphasis on its internationalization strategy, with the goal of strengthening USask’s partnerships and relationships with the global community. In recent years, USask and Government of Saskatchewan leadership have taken the lead on  to , India, Vietnam and more, expanding and strengthening international relationships and advancing Saskatchewan’s place in the world in terms of research, industry, graduate student training and economic growth.
