More or Less: Are you ready for Christmas?

Today if you ask me if I am ready for Christmas, I would have to say yes.

WEYBURN - The most common question heard this time of year is “Are you ready for Christmas?”

There were times this simple phrase would have sent me in to an endless tumble of thoughts: “Have you bought all the gifts and baked all the treats? Have you cleaned and decorated and drove from store to store searching for the perfect present for your neighbour’s cat’s girlfriend? Have you bought ten times the amount of groceries you would normally need so you can make those squares and cookies that no one will eat because they are so full of turkey and cabbage rolls?”

I’m a planner, however I do tend to leave things until the last minute. This often means that the “little extras” that I plan do not get done, but the essential things do.

Over the last few years, I realized that the expectations I put on myself are on a much grander scale than I have time, energy or means for. Getting caught up in the need to “be ready” has often left me too tired to enjoy the actual celebration.

Today if you ask me if I am ready for Christmas, I would have to say yes. I still have not bought all the gifts nor have I baked all the treats, however…

I am ready to spend time with my family and loved ones.

I am ready to enjoy a delicious meal with many traditional favourites.

I am ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

I am ready to enjoy a few days away from the office.

I am ready to drive around town, sipping hot chocolate and enjoying the lights and decorations.

I am ready to listen to my favourite Christmas music. (Boney M, The Johner Brothers and Elvis CDs are in the rotation.)

Focussing on the day itself, rather than the preparation, has given me peace of mind. No matter if your celebration is grandiose or humble, remember to focus on the moment, not the preparation or the impending clean up.

I’m ready for Christmas. Are you?
