No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted - quote of ancient Greek story teller Aesop.

WEYBURN - It is Random Act of Kindness Week, so keep an eye out for amazing RAKtivisits as they share kindness in our community!

Random Acts of Kindness Week aims to inspire people to be generous and kind by performing gracious acts. The official Random Acts of Kindness Day is February 17, and it was first established in 2004 in New Zealand.

It is good timing for Random Acts of Kindness Week too, as the annual Pink Day to advocate taking steps to stop bullying falls on Wednesday, Feb. 22, when our local school divisions observe the Winter Break.

This week, schools are taking part in the annual Be Kind Online day, a program that aims to end bullying and cyberbullying in our communities. The program is sponsored by SaskTel and is held today, Feb. 15. We even have a few schools who will be taking part in the Random Acts of Kindness Day on Friday.

Everyone can use more kindness in their lives. Even the smallest act of kindness can change a life. And one random act of kindness can flourish and expand into dozens, or even hundreds.

I would like to share a story of how a small act of kindness made a huge impact for my son, Christopher. Last week, he was out shopping for some new clothes with his mentor. One of the stops was at the Weyburn Salvation Army, where he had tried on a suit.

According to my son, a lady in the store had decided to purchase that suit for him, after seeing how much he was proud to be wearing it. I found out when I inquired about her to send her a card, that she was from Melfort, travelling through Weyburn on her way to Estevan.

My son was beaming from ear-to-ear when he came home with that suit in his hands. He was so careful with ensuring the suit stayed on the hanger, until he got it to his closet. He was even careful to make sure our two cats did not get anywhere near the new suit. He wore it to school the next day, and just looked so mature.

There might be no way to thank “Lady From Melfort” for her simple act of kindness. The best way I can express my thanks is to give to the next person, and find a way to express kindness.

After all, showing kindness to others allows them to see how you would like to be treated in return. Remember the golden rule: treat others how you would treat yourself, and everyone will be happier and kinder in the long run!
