REGINA - Team Sask has announced the full contingent of athletes for the 20 sports that will proudly represent the province at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.
Flag bearer, Luca Veeman, long track speed skater from Saskatoon will lead Saskatchewan into the opening ceremony on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
The Canada Winter Games will run until March 5, 2023.
There are 217 athletes, 20 sports, 74 coaches and support staff, and 26 mission staff coming from 60 communities across Saskatchewan, forming a full contingent of 317 participants. Team Sask is truly a province-wide team ready to compete against the best in the country.
Strong medal contenders in many disciplines along with provincial and national champions in their respective sports are found among the team’s ranks. Team Sask is eagerly waiting to compete once again since the last Canada Games in Niagara this past August where 32 medals were brought home to Saskatchewan. Chef de Mission, Mark Bracken formally announced Team Sask's full contingent to media and addressed the crowd of athletes, coaches, and representatives from the Government of Saskatchewan, Sask Sport Inc., and the Saskatchewan Games Council.
“Every one of our teams has put in a tremendous amount of preparation to get ready for their moment on the national stage,” said Bracken. “These Games will be an opportunity to build lifelong memories, meet new friends from across the province and country, and enjoy the incredible experience that only a major multi-sport Games can offer.”
“Congratulations to all of the Saskatchewan athletes, coaches and support staff who are representing our province at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island,” said Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross. “Your hard work, perseverance and determination has given you the opportunity to showcase your abilities at Canada’s prestigious Winter Games. You are role models and ambassadors for Saskatchewan, and we are proud to have you represent our province. Thank you for your commitment to sport.”
Athletes who compete at the Canada Games represent the country’s next generation of national, international, and Olympic and Paralympic champions. Team Sask alumni Mark McMorris, Emily Clark, Rylan Weins, Shelby Newkirk, Kenzie Priddell, Catriona LeMay Doan, Graham Fish and Brittany Hudak to name a few, can all count their previous Canada Games experiences as a stepping stone to the Olympic or Paralympic Games.
