REGINA - The province has announced there will not be any need for the grading of eggs sold direct from farmer to consumer at Saskatchewan Farmers’ markets.
This news is on the direction of the Minister of Health. According to the province's news release, this move will ensure that the Ministry of Health and the SHA maintain a common sense approach to food safety, specific to eggs.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday afternoon, Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill s explained the rationale for the decision.
"What we announced today is really just providing clarity," said Cockrill, who noted consultation is under way right now on the food safety regulations in the province.
"What we announced today is really just a clarification on the policy that the SHA will be taking to eggs that are sold to farmers markets. You know, eggs that are sold at farmers markets from a farm direct-to-consumer, there's not going to be grading that's going to happen at farmers markets. It doesn't make sense. You know, we just need to find a common-sense approach for people to be able to go to farmers markets and pick up locally grown vegetables, or locally raised meats and eggs, and I think the clarification today will help that and ensure, again, that a lot of our small producers in the province still have the ability to sell direct-to-consumers."
