REGINA - Regina Coronation Park MLA Mark Docherty today has announced his resignation from the Legislative Assembly.
The Saskatchewan Party caucus confirmed Monday afternoon in a news release that Docherty is resigning as of Feb. 10. The news release also stated a by-election will be held within six months.
Docherty has been a Sask Party MLA for the north Regina seat since 2011. His roles include a stint in cabinet as Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport from 2014-16, and he was Speaker from 2018 to 2020.
“It has been an honour to serve the people of Coronation Park as a member of their Saskatchewan Party government for the past 11 years and to see the tremendous growth and progress in our city and our province during that time,” Docherty said in a statement.
“Serving and building community are at the heart of who I am and I look forward to continuing that important work in new ways.”
“Mark is a tremendously sincere and empathetic MLA who cares deeply about his community and its people,” said Premier Scott Moe in a statement. “I will miss the passion and compassion Mark brings to our caucus discussions.”
Opposition Leader Carla Beck thanked Docherty for “his service to our province as an MLA, a cabinet minister and as Speaker,” in a statement.
“Mark has devoted himself to his community and has earned the trust of his constituents and respect among his peers. I wish him all the best and know that whatever he does next will be in service of his community.”
Beck added “I hope that the premier will call this by-election as soon as possible. The people of Regina Coronation Park deserve a strong voice in the Legislature.”
