We are saddened to announce the Final Ride for Charles Harvey Smith on January 1, 2025. He passed peacefully in his sleep. Once again he will ride his beloved Spec into the sunset and beyond. He was broken hearted when he found out that she had passed. Such a gentle soul, she was. Charlie, Jasper, and Spec -together again.... Charles- Charlie to most - was born in Davidson, September 23, 1928, to Ethel and Ernest Smith. He was the second oldest of 6 children. He grew up on the farm, leaving in his teens to explore the world. He worked on a few farms in the Pense/Stoney Beach area and then enlisted to go to Korea for a couple of years. There, he learned the heavy duty mechanics trade. Upon his return he worked in the Regina and Winnipeg areas for different road building contractors thereby learning the many road building abilities that he possessed. He assisted in building the Perimeter Road in Winnipeg and he also helped in building the Ring Road, among other roads in Regina. While in the Winnipeg area, he met and married Gail. With the wife, came the pre-made family- a daughter Donna, who passed in 2013, and a daughter Carol. With the 2 girls came 2 grandchildren. Son of Donna - David, son of Carol – Dwayne. Charlie and Gail first lived in Elfros, while Charlie was an agent for the grain elevator. They then moved to Mortlach in 1964, where the family was raised. Charlie worked for the RM of Wheatlands #163 until his retirement in 1990. Then, he bought a "hobby farm" just on the outskirts of town. The house was in the town limits, and the barn was in the country… There, he spent countless hours with his small herd of cattle and his draft horses and of course, his beloved Spec, who took him on many trail rides... He was very involved in the Horse Club and the Agility Club as his companion Jasper was absolutely in love with agility and the girls in the club. After his wife's death in 2010, Charlie remained on the farm until November of 2019 when he decided the "cook wasn't cutting it anymore” and he thought he might starve to death if he had to eat his own cooking any longer. He moved into the Bentley retirement home (as he didn't figure he was old enough for an old folk's home-at age 91....) and wished he had moved in a lot sooner. He really liked it there, and teased the staff unmercifully. In March of 2023, he moved to Crescent Park Retirement Villa, where, in turn, he teased the staff unmercifully as well. His final adventure was a move to the Lafleche Health Centre LTC, in Aug 2024. He really liked it there as well. There really wasn't any place he didn't like as long as he didn't have to do the cooking and cleaning.
Charlie was predeceased by his wife Gail, his stepdaughter Donna, his faithful companion Jasper, and of course, the apple of his eye, Spec. He was also predeceased by his mom Ethel, and dad Ernest; 1 older brother John; 2 younger brothers Bob (Robert) and his wife Alta; and Tom; sister Ethel and brother-in-law Lewis Smale. He is survived by his stepdaughter Carol (Robert), Ethel's family (Nancy, Cathy, and Craig and their families), brother Walter, sister-in-law Gina (Tom) and their family (Travis, Robin and Sonya and their families), the family of Robert and Alta (Debra, Terry, Shawn and Jody and their families) grandsons David (Stephanie), and Dwayne (Michelle) and great grandson Micah and his well-loved nieces and nephews on Gail's side of the family. The family wishes to thank Michaela for all her compassionate care in Moose Jaw, and Holly, Janet, Alexa and Sydney, in Lafleche, for their compassion and care in Dad's final hours.
