SASKATOON - Oct. 7, the University of Saskatchewan, USports named their Academic All-Canadian list, given to athletes as a varsity athlete, competing in USports as well as maintaining an average above 80 per cent in their academics. This is a tremendous display of commitment and dedication to both university studies and university athletics.
Treyton Pernitsky, part of the U of S track and field team, and Kabri Sittler, a member of the U of S wrestling team were both bestowed this honour on Oct. 7 in USask announcement. Both are grads of McLurg High School in Wilkie.
This is Pernitsky’s second year being named to this list, earning for his first year online during the pandemic.
Pernitsky tells the Press-Herald, “Academic All-Canadian status is something that us student athletes work hard to obtain, and I am honoured to receive it again for my studies during the pandemic.”
The U of S Track and Field team, that includes Pernitsky, is currently in the heart of their cross-country competition season. The team’s first race was the Sled Dog that took place Sept. 25 in Saskatoon, where Pernitsky ran a strong race to finish 11th in the 8km event with a time of 27:32.
For the Press-Herald, Pernitsky adds, “Oct. 1 weekend, we had our first team travel since the start of the pandemic travelling to Camrose Alberta. It was a very challenging course over many hills, and I had a race I am very proud of running 27:26 for the 8km and finishing in 8th place. Both races were out of about 60 runners.”
“Our next race is the Canada West championships which we are hosting this year at Victoria Park in Saskatoon on Oct. 30. Our team is excited to compete as we have grown much larger in numbers and stronger overall than the Huskies men’s cross-country team has been in a long time. After Canada West, we will be taking our top 7 to go to Quebec City to run the USports nationals’ race!” says Pernitsky.
Kabri Sittler, who is a member of the U of S Wrestling team, tells the Press-Herald “There were eight athletes from the wrestling team who were academic all-Canadians this year. The athletes are taking a variety of different degrees so it’s good to see different colleges represented. being an Academic All-Canadian isn’t an easy thing to do on top of training countless hours a week so it’s a pretty big accomplishment at the USport level. “
Sittler says their first wrestling competition is the weekend of Oct. 22 in Calgary, the Dino Open.
“We’ve been training hard preparing for our return to competition for the first time in over a year. The Huskies have a busy schedule of being on the road, but we are back in Saskatoon the weekend of Nov. 26 for the Huskie dual and Huskie open.”
