Wilkie recreation director updates on existing and new pool news

After a frustrating pool season with equipment problems, the Wilkie Swimming Pool will wrap up on a high note with their annual barbecue and water show.

WILKIE — Aging recreation venue issues across the Press-Herald readership area have become a common topic this summer. Wilkie Community Swimming Pool was among those who experienced difficulty this summer.

The town’s recreation department said boiler problems definitely played a role in a decrease in user numbers at Wilkie’s Community Pool. The pool opened later as a result and there were some down days and lower attendance numbers with colder temperatures in the pool.

Repair costs have not yet been tallied.

“I do not yet have all of the invoices regarding all repairs that were completed,” says Wilkie Recreation Director Lori Fenrich.

The last day for swimming in Wilkie for 2023 will be Aug. 28.

As for the new pool project, Fenrich, says there is still $520,000 in fundraising needed to fulfil their grant requirements for the new swimming pool project. Constructions is set to start in the fall of 2023 with completion slated for July 1, 2025. It is hoped that the existing pool can continue to operate for two more seasons.

“We are working on ideas and rec board meets again on Sept. 6 and will be discussing upcoming fundraisers to help fulfil the fundraising requirement as part of the grant received,” adds Fenrich.

Fenrich says to date, the town has not received any large corporate donations for the new pool project, nor have they set up a corporate donor package for naming rights or donation level plaques at the new pool.

The staff at the Wilkie Community Swimming Pool will once again hold their annual water show and barbecue Aug. 22, with a glow stick party to follow.
