Waterline replacement and arena renovations on track: Kerrobert mayor report

Mayor Wayne Mock of Kerrobert updates residents on some of the action and events that has been taking place in the community this past month

KERROBERT - Kerrobert has been busy over the last couple of months. The waterline replacement project is going well. Gee Bee’s construction from Kipling were hired to do this project. The summer weather co-operated for this type of work. Their crews lost only one or two days of work due to wet weather.

The downtown was completed with new waterlines as well as new sidewalks and the first layer of new pavement. The paving crews will be back next summer to complete the second layer of pavement downtown, and then pave the rest of the streets that had been dug up this summer.

So far, the project is on budget and Gee Bee’s should have no problem completing this phase on time.

The arena has taken on many improvements over the last few seasons. One ongoing area of concern was the Zamboni. The Zamboni has had extensive work done to it over the last decade, but it had become apparent it would likely not make it through another season. Recreation Director Bobbi Hebron put out the call to the community and surrounding RMs with a plan to acquire a new Zamboni. We were overwhelmed with the support from local businesses, residents and surrounding RMs that all stepped up and after a few months of fundraising, enough money was raised to make a new Zamboni a reality. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

The swimming pool had a successful season. With so many hot days, the local credit union donated several free swim days, which is greatly appreciated. The golf course also did well and is still going, so book a tee time before it is too late.

There are some gatherings planned for the near future, such as a fall festival in our downtown sector, which is scheduled for Oct. 2,  to include a beer garden, music, possible sidewalk sales and entertainment for kids including bouncy castles and face painting.

There are several other functions being planned such as a sports auction, duelling pianos golf course fundraiser and a Christmas party, to be put on by the Kerrobert Courthouse restoration society. All of these functions are waiting to see how COVID-19 restrictions will play out. With a fourth wave upon us, we can only hope people will do everything in their power to prevent another lockdown. Hospitals, schools, daycares and businesses are all being effected with ever increasing numbers. Some communities are getting hit harder, so whether it is getting vaccinated or isolating, we need to rely on each other to try to lower the chance of this virus evolving into new variants.

Make good choices and stay safe out there.
