Unity rallies for Ducherer family following vehicle crash

A number of groups, organizations and people found ways to fundraise for the Ducherer family recovery fund, following a significant traffic collision

UNITY — Unity residents rallied together to help the Ducherer family following a vehicle collision Jan. 16 as parents travelled to their son’s hockey game. The collision took place near Rosetown and has left both parents in Royal University Hospital with significant injuries.

Once people learned of the situation, a number of groups and individuals sprang to action, rallying to support the family still at home as well as initiating a recovery fund for Sheldon and Vicki during their long road to recovery.

The movement began with offers of drivers, assistance with kids at home and meals, as financial support started to be co-ordinated.

Jan. 19 U18 hockey game admission was directed to the family, as one of their sons plays on the team. Another son plays on a U15 team and they will also earmark admission for the cause in a game the same week. Unity Minor Hockey also added a contribution, along with Unity Minor Ball, as the family has children involved in both organizations.

The ball was beginning to roll as it was realized the couple would be off work for some time and people wanted to do whatever they could to help out. Hats were being passed and staff collections were being taken.

The newly opened Ma and Me Bakery made a social media post stating that all proceeds from cream puffs on Jan. 20 would go directly to the Ducherer family recovery fund, as Sheldon had been a regular patron there who loved this treat made there.

UCHS designated their monthly hat day proceeds to the family.

A benefit account was sent up at Unity’s BMO as more people expressed their desire to help the family by any means they could. Interested people could contribute directly at the bank at 306-228-4122 or contact Kurt Elder at 306-228-8406 for etransfer details.

At the time of this story, there were rumblings of other businesses and organizations contributing in some manner.
