UNITY — Construction is winding down for the year. There will be pavement on the streets except for the 400 block of 1st Avenue. ASL will be back next spring to finish up. We're glad the season lasted as long as it did.
Our bylaw officer will be enforcing our pet bylaw. If you haven't registered your cat or dog, please stop by the office to do so. This way if your pet does get loose, we'll know who to contact for its safe return. Review the bylaw so you are familiar with the fines for pets unattended.
The arena is already a busy place. The final touches are being added to the curling ice and scheduling is ongoing. With this weather, it won't be long before the outdoor rink is ready to use. In the meantime, enjoy Halloween with all the ghosts and goblins running around.
We look forward to taking part in Remembrance Day services and supporting our veterans. With the coverage of the wars in Ukraine and Israel, we are always grateful for the peace we enjoy.
Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association held their regional meeting for our area Oct. 11 in Kindersley. SUMA does advocacy work for their members. I have brought the issue of tendering long-term care pharmacy services to their attention. They have also been lobbying the provincial government to drop the PST paid by the municipality to the contractors hired for infrastructure improvements. SUMA is looking at restructuring its board to better provide efficiencies for the members.
I would like to remind local businesses to check their emails for updates from the Chamber of Commerce. The chamber has been working on some great ideas to welcome and encourage people to visit the many great businesses Unity has. Santa Day and Winter Wonderland will be here before we know it.
Council has started on long-term planning. We will be getting input from the directors of each department in case we've missed something, or they have different priorities. We have a long list and will be working to prioritize over the next few months. Contract negotiations will be starting soon with our employees as the current contract will run out in December.
We consider our employees priceless but we are also aware that every financial decision we make impacts the bottom line of our taxpayers.
In just over a year, it will be time to elect your council for the next four years. If you're interested in how council works, this will be your opportunity to participate.
