UNITY — The Conduct Investigation Committee of the Law Society of Saskatchewan has issued a notice that Ammad Anwar of Unity has been placed on an interim suspension pursuant to Section 45 of The Legal Profession Act, 1990, and Law Society of Saskatchewan Rules 1121 and 1122. As of Feb. 4, Anwar is not entitled to practise law until further notice.

According to the notice, the Law Society of Saskatchewan has reasonable grounds to believe Anwar has breached its trust accounting rules. Further, the society also has reasonable grounds to believe he has facilitated transactions that are fraudulent conveyances or are contrary to anti-money laundering rules and regulations.

The Conduct Investigation Committee has determined that further investigation is required regarding Anwar’s conduct and that allowing him to continue practising during the investigation would present an immediate risk to the public.

As stated on the Anwar & Riou Law Office website, Anwar, who was born in Pakistan, attended the University of Punjab, earning a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of laws before working as an advocate with a law firm in Pakistan. He later completed his master of laws at the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom before moving to Canada in 2011.

He continued his studies at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) in the Law Practice Program and articled with Impact Law in Vaughan, Ont.

Anwar made Saskatchewan his home, working at a tax preparation firm before articling with Riou Law Office in Unity. He was admitted to the Law Society of Saskatchewan in March 2020. He worked as an associate with Riou Law Office until March 2021, when he took over the firm and practised as a partner with Anwar & Riou Law Office. In August 2021, he was admitted to the Law Society of Yukon and has since provided legal services to residents in Saskatchewan and Yukon.
