UNITY — The Unity Composite High School senior girls’ basketball team traded in their Warrior reds for a slightly lighter shade for their annual Pink tournament, raising money for breast cancer research.
UCHS principal and coach Aaron Melnyk told Â鶹ÊÓƵ that the team gained seven rookies this year after graduating many players last year.
“Having such a young team means we need experience. They have been learning lots, and the team is steadily growing toward the playoffs. I am optimistic about our future with so many talented young athletes on the team,” he said. Of the 28 games the team has played this season, their win-lose record currently sits at 17-11.
The lead-up to this year’s tournament started with some fun initiatives at UCHS, with ‘cookie breaks’ fundraisers and many generous donations from the community for bucket draw prizes over the tournament. The team raised more than $3,000 for Breast Cancer Canada.
Aside from winning in the fundraising efforts, the team had to battle it hard on the court in their first game against the Langham Vikings. The Warriors were defeated 62-58, coming back stronger the next day to compete in the B-side. They dominated in their games against Kindersley and Biggar, claiming silver in the standings. Valley Christian Academy from Osler won the top spot of the tournament.
“The tournament was filled with close games and the field was composed of evenly matched teams. We have some excellent passers and transition players that can get out in open space and make plays. It is an exciting brand of basketball,” added Melnyk.
