Two games – two wins. The Unity Cardinals have started their 2024 season in charge, already having scored a total of 32 runs.

Despite the cool weather, a good crowd was out to watch their opening game, at home, May 14, against the Mervin Flyers. The Cards took charge right away, with starting pitcher Garin Scherr striking out the first two batters and shortstop Thomas Snell throwing to Hunter Sperle at first to take out the third. It was three up, three down.

Up at bat, the opposing pitcher had to deal with six Cardinals, all of whom hit the ball, before getting out of the inning. Leadoff batter Tanner Huber and veteran Cory Wildeman both lit up the scoreboard, on RBIs by Scherr and Snell.

Ahead 2-0 at the end of the first, the Cardinals brought in at least one runner in every inning but the third. Mervin did get a runner home a few times, but the final score was 11-7 for Unity, without picking up the bats in the bottom of the seventh.

With an ample bench, the Cards substituted a number of players in the latter part of the game, letting most experience their first action of the season. Ethan Scherr closed the game on the mound.

The Cards continued their winning ways on the road two days later, beating the Glaslyn Orioles 21-7. The Lashburn Cardinals came to town May 21 but results were unable in time for press deadlines. With some away games in the interim, the Unity Cards’ next home game isn’t until June 5.

The Wilkie Brewers start their season on the road this weekend, and host the Unity Cardinals next week Thursday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m.
