Senior Cards open NSRBL season with loss at home

Standard Hill Lakers spoiled the home opener party for Unity Cardinals handing them their first loss of the season.

UNITY - The senior men’s Unity Cardinals – back to the league after a year’s sabbatical – kicked off the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League season May 18, hosting the Standard Hill Lakers in the only game of week one, and gifting their guests the win.

The game was tight early on, with each team’s leadoff batter – Jesse Stansfield for the Lakers and Cory Wildeman for the Cardinals – scoring a run in the first inning, Wildeman and two subsequent batters being walked and Stansfield coming home on an RBI by Brett Harrison.

Inning two went quickly with neither team threatening, but Hunter Sperle’s RBI had the Cardinals put another run on the scoreboard in the third, to pull ahead, 2-1. The Lakers then scored the only run in the fourth so inning five started out with the teams tied 2-2.

Then the wheels fell off the bus for the Cards as they were unable to score again, and the Lakers rallied to score four runs in the fifth, sealing the deal with another two in the seventh for a final 8-2 score.

Pitching for the Cardinals in the game were Garin Scherr, Tanner Huber and Colby Frocklage.

The season is young, and so, largely, is the revamped Unity team. Fans are hoping for some wins later in the season as the players get some experience under their belts and start to gel as a team. The Cards will be in Mervin May 23. Their next home game is Tuesday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m., against the North Battleford Beavers.
