Rock solid advice from mixed doubles curling team Walker/ Muyres

Forty young curlers take part in the 13th annual Community Rocks Curling Tour between Unity and Denzil Curling Clubs.

UNITY—Young curlers in the west-central region of the province got a lifetime experience and on-ice advice from bronze medalist, Laura Walker and Kirk Muyres. The mixed doubles team came to Unity, Kindersley, and Denzil between Jan. 28 – 30 with the 13th annual Community Rocks Curling Tour, where 40 junior curlers joined them at the curling clubs in Unity and Denzil.

“The kids were so much fun, they were engaged, focused, and found moments to have a laugh. It was very rewarding and good to see the talent in this corner of the province,” said Muyres.

Junior curlers of varying skill levels were welcomed to attend the tour and for high school curler Jordis Zunti, meeting the team allowed her to learn something new.

“I have gone to many events and camps, met some cool people, and made new friends. This event was a fun evening that was well organized, the professionals also gave lots of good tips and tricks.”

In Denzil, the kids had different reactions to meeting the duo according to Michelle Sieben.

“Some kids thought the tour was very cool and awesome to be able to meet someone who has curled on TV, others were thankful that an opportunity like this was available at their local curling rink.” The highlight of the evening for the kids was winning jerseys worn by the mixed doubles team and Walker’s husband, Jeff, who plays for Team Gushue.

Sieben, who was excited about the opportunity, said having top-level athletes doing local tours such as this helps ignite passion and excitement among club members of all ages.

“It provides an opportunity for young or new curlers to see what’s possible with dedication and practice. They gain firsthand insight into advancing their skills and improving their game.” She also said the increased visibility helps attract future sponsors and future curlers.

“Sometimes we think curling is struggling to keep rolling in our towns, but we have people that are committed to making it happen and keeping our beautiful clubs thriving,” said Muyres.

The Community Rocks Curling Tour was made possible by some key sponsors including Corr Grain, Peace Hills Insurance Building, Norstar, Strait Group Ltd., Hardline Curling, Michel’s Industries, Ltd., and Understood Mineral Resources.
