Girls
The McLurg High School Broncs from Wilkie hosted their 2A regional basketball tournament and romped through their games to come out regional champions and qualify for Hoopla in Saskatoon March 21 and 22.
The Broncs started their weekend March 14 with an 81-19 win over the Macklin Sabres. They met Rosthern in the final March 15 and had another lopsided win, scoring 84 points to Rosthern’s 35.
The Broncs’ first game at the provincial championships will be against Norquay.
Also heading to the girls’ side at Hoopla are the Kerrobert Composite School Rebels, who are a 1A team.
The Rebels were also ungracious hosts. They beat Eston 72-22, and had to bring out one of their best performances of the season to defeat Asquith in the final, ultimately winning regionals with a score of 71-61.
The Rebels will play Preeceville in their first matchup at Hoopla.
The Unity Composite High School Warriors travelled to Indian Head where they faced Birch Hills in the first game. Losing 74-58 put them onto the consolation side where they were able to win a tight defensive game against Langenburg, 48-40 to claim third place at regionals but no berth to Hoopla.
The Macklin Sabres ended up fourth at the regionals in Wilkie.
Boys
On the boys’ side, the Unity boys hosted their 3A regionals and came up with a win March 14, beating Maple Creek 72-40 to qualify for the regional final the next day.
Waldheim had come to play, however, and took the victory away from the Warriors in the final, 72-50. The Warriors had to settle for second place at regionals and will not be going to Hoopla.
The Kerrobert Rebels were in Kinistino for regional weekend. They lost a close game to Leask 87-79 to move to the consolation side where they were able to defeat Herbert 93-47, thus finishing third at regionals.
Good luck to all the local girls who will be representing our area, playing with the Wilkie Broncs and the Kerrobert Rebels.
