Pedestrian and parking updates are happening

New signage, new lighted pedestrian crossing and other community updates are part of Mayor Del Frari's monthly mayor report

UNITY - Teachers have been at schools getting things ready for the return to class. Those students who have moved on to further studies in larger centres, remember home is where the heart is. We hope all of our students and teachers have an incredible year full of friendships and new experiences around every corner.

Unity Public Works Staff have installed a new stop sign and pedestrian crossing light at the south end of Main Street. The funding for this came fully from a grant applied for by former economic development officer, Carey Baker. The money came from the provincial Traffic Safety Fund, which the province runs in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). We now have a safer crossing for those walking to see their doctor, dentist, investment advisor, librarian or Town of Unity staff and council.

It will be another month before the signs are in place for the change to parallel parking on the west side of the post office. In the meantime, the bylaw has been passed but will not be enforced until signs are in place. Thanks for your patience. We are confident parallel parking will be safer for traffic flow on this street.

As I write this, the pool will close its doors the end of the week. Staff kept the pool open every day this summer. Lessons and private lessons were both well attended. It is so nice to see families enjoying our facilities.

The town is thankful for their summer students and pool staff as it was often hot and windy and these employees helped keep everything beautiful and running smooth. As always, we hope to see many of you back next year.

As your town council, we will be scheduling a day for strategic planning. It’s important for council and staff to work towards the same goals, and for everyone to know and understand the premise of those goals. We will also schedule a public meeting, likely in October. We’ll keep you posted.

Our website updates have lagged and we are working to update the site so you can view the latest information. Remember you are always welcome to attend council meetings. If you want to speak to council about an issue, you must first fill out a form available at the office and online.

The cemetery committee has been busy getting the new map installed besides assisting with the beautification of the grounds. This is strictly a group of volunteers who have worked alongside Parks and Recreation Director Nicole Headrick. They have finished the fundraising for the map. This work and dedication makes us all so proud to be part of the community.

We have a federal election Sept.20 with five days of advance polls the week before. Make your voice is heard by exercising your right to vote.  With all the violence in the world, Canada provides us a safe haven. Our town of Unity is priceless.

Hopefully our farmer friends can get the harvest in, such as it is. The bit of rain helps the pastures but came too late to boost the crops. Over the coming winter we hope you can enjoy some curling , skating, hockey  or cross-country skiing at our recreation venues and areas. Some other fall activities are starting soon that include football, karate, dance and possibly gymnastics.

I always look forward to seeing everyone out enjoying what Unity has to offer.
