UNITY – A new store will be landing in Unity this coming weekend.
Out of Africa Deli and Sweets will be opening Nov. 10-12. Owner Heloise Vermeulen says it will have the feel of a Â鶹ÊÓƵ African roadside shop and will offer a little bit of everything on top of the delicious foods and treats she is well known for.
“It will be home-cooked, fresh food with Â鶹ÊÓƵ African influences along with desserts and lots more,” says the owner.
Vermeulen will be serving meat pies, sausages, Boerewors rolls plus other items. She also will be serving some Indian-inspired foods such as butter chicken and samosas.
Once open, store hours will be posted on the door of 302 - Main St.
Heloise Vermeulen said she had begun feeling homesick roughly a year after moving to Canada. She had always enjoyed preparing more common dishes for other African immigrants in the area as well as for her family. She chose to start making her favourite dishes and sharing them at tradeshows to showcase the deliciousness Â鶹ÊÓƵ Africa has to offer.
For the past five years, Vermeulen had been working out of her home kitchen, offering her goods online and at tradeshows. She was pleasantly surprised when she began selling out of items, with positive comments from those who had never tried the delicacies. When the opportunity arose to move the business to a storefront, she began looking at this as a possible business venture and is excited for the adventure.
