UNITY - Unity Fire Chief Dwaine Kopp says their department did not receive any calls for March. However, that doesn’t mean their team isn’t busy preparing for other occurrences with training and potential hazards that spring season may bring.
Unity Fire Department are currently getting prepared for grass fire season. The team will be undergoing pump training and getting a different wild land truck set up with tank and pump.
Kopp notes, “It is always surprising how dry the dead grass from last year can be so don’t just assume because we had lots of snow, that it isn’t a hazard to burn carelessly.” Cigarettes flicked out vehicle windows are a dangerous ignition source when environment is dry from fall remnants that act as tinder in spring.
UFD welcomed one new member with good experience but they also lost one member. They continue to seek additional members to join this division of the community’s protective services and residents are encouraged to contact any member for details on becoming a member of Unity’s volunteer fire department.
Chief Kopp also reminds drivers that kids are or will be riding bikes soon and to use this as a reminder to be more cautious when driving around town.
