Mayor's report from Unity: Byelection upcoming, landfill government audit may result in changes

Mayor Sharon Del Frari provides her monthly update to residents of Unity for September

UNITY - Unity’s Community Centre is ready for the rink season. The renovations have really brightened everything up beautifully. We hope all of our teams and skaters have a happy and healthy season.

Football games are ongoing. Watch for the home games under the lights to come out and support our players. They’re playing well. It’s been nice to catch some Regina Thunder highlights on the news and see hometown player, Zenon Orobko, making great plays.

One of our local businesses, Fitness Lair, held an open house this week. They provide many opportunities for strength training, cross fit and gym facilities if you prefer to work on your own or with a buddy.

Our hometown Sperle’s Tire and Battery celebrated their 50th anniversary in Unity this past month. This speaks to the service the Sperle family and staff have given to our community and surrounding area. You often hear the stories of someone they have come to the rescue for.

North West Terminal celebrated their 25th anniversary this past week. They were founded by farmers with a vision who wouldn’t take no for an answer. Over these past 25 years their vision has expanded and provides multiple jobs in our area. We’re excited to see what their next expansion brings to the area.

I would like to thank our Unity and District Chamber of Commerce for managing to secure four major candidates for their candidates' forum on this past federal election. They provided Unity residents with the chance to see and hear the candidates.

Unfortunately we are not at the end of the pandemic. With the restrictions coming into place Oct. 1, things are going to be extremely difficult for many of our businesses. Please remember this isn’t their doing. They just want to get through this like the rest of us. I’m sure our health care staff are feeling the crush as well. The situation we face will not be easy for anyone, let alone those who have committed to care for us. We appreciate you more than you can ever know. Patience and kindness must be uppermost in our actions.

Sept. 30 will be the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. I can’t imagine having our children taken far from us then not being able to speak our language once they get to this strange place, experiencing division and separation. Hopefully we can help with the healing and gain understanding of the path many had to travel. Recognizing Orange Shirt Day and what it represents begins the healing process.

Orange will always be a beautiful colour. Not only will it represent healing but it heralds fall. Make as many trips out and about as you can to enjoy the beauty in our town and area. There is nothing like the smells and colour of fall. Most of the garden produce is carried in. The farm machinery is being stored until next season. Take some time to enjoy the beautiful weather, watch some football or hike through the parks on your way to the rink. Support our Local Businesses as much as possible. If you have some extra energy, join a local charitable organization and make a difference.

Town council will be working on plans for the future. We have projects to prioritize for budgeting purposes. There is still the decision to be made on hiring for the economic development management position or changing the title to encompass other areas

The byelection for a new councillor will likely be sometime in November.

The landfill went through a government audit. Once the report comes back to us, I’m sure there will have to be some changes made to our operation. We will continue to provide the best service possible for our tax dollars. Thank you all for being a part of Unity
