MACKLIN — In a packed 24-team, six-pool format, the Macklin Lakers won their way to the U15 B provincial championship final, played July 10.
The team’s roster included players Faith Veller, Paige Reschny, Abbey Folk, Sienna Kelly, Brianne Elston, Isabella Stang, Avery Cowie, Hayden Baier, Hennessy McKinnon, Brooklyn Kraft, Kenzie Tough. Coaches for the Laker were Head Coach, Patrick Veller along with Assistant Coaches, Sheldon Reschny and Andi Folk. Players McKinnon and Kraft were from Kerrobert.
“The competition was tough, but the girls went undefeated in the round robin play, besting Meadow Lake, Twin City and Regina to qualify into the top six,” Veller said.
“Placing third overall, the girls started the do or die playoff series Sunday morning beating out the Storm Selects and then taking out the second place ranked team, Maidstone, to advance to the final.”
This placed the girls in the gold medal final against Swift Current, a team that gave up only two runs all weekend. While the final game was not the outcome they wanted, the girls had a terrific weekend and worked very hard, all the while with great sportsmanship. The final result was a Provincial silver medal after showing strong determination and dedication throughout the entire tournament.
In other provincial news
U17 West Central Ice, based out of Kerrobert, lost a one-run opening game in their provincials, losing to Battleford Bandits 9-8. A second game resulted in a tough loss in a mercy win by Tisdale Riverdogs. Weyburn handed the Ice their third loss. The team was determined to play for pride and captured a 7-6 victory over Regina Storm in their final round robin game. As a result, they were not able to advance to provincial playoff Sunday.
The U15 Unity Panthers travelled to Saskatoon for their provincial event. The team lost their opening game 13-10 to the Storm Selects. The Panthers came back on a mission and opened day two of the playoff event by a score of 16-0 over the Saskatoon Phantoms. They also soundly defeated Delisle Diamond Dogs 18-5 in their final round robin game but with only the top team of each of six pools advancing to playoff Sunday, the Panthers were eliminated.
Macklin Lakers hosted the provincial Twilite baseball championship and captured the Saskatchewan title at home.
