Lots of local content on Unity Miners roster

The season kicks off for the Unity Miners on Oct. 28 in Biggar and their home opener will take place Oct. 29.

UNITY — Senior hockey season has begun. The Unity Miners kicked off their Sask. West Hockey League season with an opening game in Biggar Oct. 28, facing off against the Nationals and returned home to play Hafford Oct. 29.

So far, the roster includes many UMH alumni players, although longtime Miners executive member Brian Woytiuk said the final roster is not yet confirmed.

According to the SWHL website, the Miners lineup includes two sets of brother duos in Carter and Nolan Acton and Ethan and Garrin Scherr. Other roster players include Mitch Cooper, Brayden Schultz, Jared Risling, Mark Ganter, Joel Timmermans, Ryan Jackson, Alex David, Jaxon Bertoia, Trevar Mann, Taylor Bucis, Kersey Reich, Justin Gerein, Ryan Rewerts, and Braden Lacoursiere. The team is a blend of veterans and newcomers.

Joey Carriere is the team’s head coach with Jake Senger serving as team manager.

November will see the Miners playing one game at home Nov. 18 and the other two games on the road. The Miners will play five games in December with four of those games being at home.

Joining longtime Miner’s hockey club executives Woytiuk, Jake Senger and Collette Lacoursiere are new additions Ken Ralston, Kevin Scherr and Jessica Gerein. Woytiuk says the club still is in need of volunteers for a number of pre-game and game day activities.

Fans can look forward to another exciting senior hockey season with an eight-team league. The team appreciates fans in the stands and welcomes folks who have not experienced the high energy games of senior hockey to come check out some games this season. The hockey club relies on game revenue to help with expenses.
