KWF forced to alter annual supper and awards

For a second year running, Kerrobert Wildlife has made the difficult decision to alter their annual wildlife dinner and awards

KERROBERT — The Kerrobert Wildlife Federation had hoped after cancelling their annual wildlife supper and awards in 2020, that the new year would provide a different opportunity. However, this was not the case and the organization is postponing their 2022 event.

“We are looking at other potential dates and trying to be optimistic that we will be able to safely hold our event," Marli Shepherd, KWF spokesperson, says. "The awards will be presented at the supper if we are able to have it at a later date this year. If that can't happen, we will look into different options for presenting the awards.”

KWF is known for the long-standing hunter safety program offered in the community and the development and maintenance of the Kerrobert Reservoir.

The reservoir is a beautiful place to enjoy year-round with multiple volunteer hours put in each year to maintain the area. The space offers bird watching, a trout pond, walking trails, native grasses, a bee aviary and much more. Other wildlife has been spotted here as well as it offers a tranquil setting for a walk, unwinding or providing a peaceful setting for a picnic or exploration adventure with youngsters.

Focusing on youth, the KWF offers hunter safety training, which usually runs in the spring with a good turnout.

The organization also tries to send a couple of kids each year to conservation camp at Hannin Creek.

With the annual supper and banquet being their main fundraiser, KWF had to look to other options to fill the void. A gun-of-the-month raffle was a successful venture with only eight tickets unsold to date. An early bird draw was held in October and the first month drawn for Jan. 4. Shepherd maintains that without that raffle, the organization would have been in some trouble.

Each year, KWF sees about 100 memberships purchased. The board consists of president Rob Cholin, vice-president Dan Cholin, secretary Kevin Meek and treasurer Jim Wilson. Other board members include Calvin Kohlman, Kyle Johnson, Marli Shepherd, Curtis Knorr, Quinton St. Pierre, Joe Dubielwicz, Brian Seffern, Wes Ternes, Harold Etsell, Amy Etsell, Tom Hovde and Lye Busch.

Kerrobert Wildlife Federation encourages new board members to join and help share the love and appreciation of the outdoors and the organization's work.

KWF has an active Facebook page, and their objectives and other details are included on the Town of Kerrobert website.
