Kickoff time: high school football is back

League conference changes allows football teams to play against new opponents.

UNITY — With the anticipation of the cool, crisp air also comes the sounds of the quarterback yelling calls.

Local high school football teams have already started their short seasons for the year. With some changes in the league conference, the teams have the opportunity to play against new teams.

Unity Warrior coach, Kyle Clark, is leading 27 players this season, five of whom are in Grade 12. They will play against Outlook, Kindersley, Rosetown, Biggar and Etonia this year.

Clark says the season opened in Kindersley Sept. 7, with the Warriors hungry for some revenge after a disappointing loss in Kindersley in the first round of the playoffs last October. “It didn’t take long for the Warriors to get on the board, as Noah Gumpinger connected with Toby Thompson for the first touchdown of the year.

“From there the boys were unstoppable, getting touchdowns from Jared Abrams, Jagr Lewin, Dax L’Heureux and Noah Gumpinger,” Clark reports.

When the dust settled, the boys left Kindersley with a convincing 46-7 victory.

Sept. 21, the Warriors went face-to-face with the undefeated Biggar Blazers, who have not given up a touchdown in their first two games so far this season. Jared Abrams, scored early with a touchdown run and before the afternoon was over, scored two more times. The Warriors would also get scores from Toby Thompson and Jayden Blanchette. The defence was particularly impressive in Biggar, forcing five turnovers, two of which Jagr Lewin ran back for touchdowns. In the end, the boys rolled to a 54-14 victory.

The Warriors are looking forward to their annual “Friday Night Lights” game which is scheduled for Oct. 13 against Rosetown with a 7:15 p.m. kickoff time.
